Baku condemns use of chemical weapons in Syria

Baku strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons in Syria, the statement issued by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reads.

"We extend our gratitude to the United Nations Mission to Investigate Allegations of the Use of Chemical Weapons in the Syrian Arab Republic for their carrying out their activities and showing professionalism under difficult security and political circumstances. Azerbaijan supports the Russia-U.S. agreement for impounding and destroying Syria`s stockpile of chemical weapons," the document reads.

The ministry notes that Azerbaijan is ready for joint activity with all the interested sides in the UN including the Security Council in order to achieve a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

"The Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is expected to make a decision after considering special procedures for expeditious destruction of the Syrian chemical weapons. In general, Azerbaijan has regarded the Security Council an organization directly responsible for the protection of international peace and security, and considered necessary an immediate fulfillment of its decisions and resolutions," the document reads.
