Ring convicted over co-op with Al-Qaeda
A Saudi Arabian citizen and 17 other individuals charged with
setting up an illegal armed group linked to terrorists were handed
down jail sentences at Azerbaijan`s Grave Crimes Court on
Monday.
According to investigators, Nail Abdul Karim al-Bedevi, known under the "Abu Jafar" nickname, had closely cooperated with the Al-Qaeda and Al-Jihad terror groups. Al-Bedevi was convicted for 14 years in jail, while the other members of the group were handed down sentences of three to 12 years, in conclusion of a two-month closed-door trial.
Jafar had undergone training in Georgia`s Pankissi gorge and was involved in warfare in the Russian republics of Daghestan and Chechnya for six years.
He came to Azerbaijan in the summer of 2007 and set up an illegal armed group consisting of militants who had previously fought in Chechnya and radical Wahhabis.
The gang was seized in an operation conducted jointly by the National Security and Interior Ministries last fall. The ring leader had managed to escape several times. He was finally arrested in the early hours on November 3 in Baku after showing armed resistance to the law enforcers. A large quantity of arms and ammunition was confiscated from the ring.
