Azerbaijan is taking immediate measures to prevent the spread of the Bunyaviridae virus in the country as the disease caused by it is affecting cattle. A relevant order was issued by Agriculture Minister Ismet Abbasov at the last board meeting on August 28.

According to the Ministry, in accordance with the Minister's instructions, experts in the field of veterinary medicine are involved in the work and public awareness activities are being conducted.

In addition, the State Veterinary Service of the Ministry of Agriculture will ensure the distribution of 15 tons of disinfectant, caustic soda, which was purchased at its own expense.

Head of the State Veterinary Service Siala Rustamova said that since the first cases of the disease among the cattle, which has spread especially in the Aran region, blood samples were taken from animals.

In addition, the International Epizootic Bureau was informed about the cattle disease recorded in Azerbaijani regions.

According to Rustamova, the infected cattle has been cured and the disease is under control. She also said that the disease is common in many European countries and is not dangerous for humans, including in case of meat consumption.

The first known case of infection in Azerbaijan was recorded on July 28, 2013.

"The main symptoms of the new virus are general deterioration of the cattle's condition, fever, and misbirth. Overall, this leads to a sharp decline in productivity. However, the disease itself does not lead to death," Rustamova said.

Bunyaviridae is spread on all continents; most of the Bunyaviridae viruses are transmitted by mosquitoes. This disease can also be transmitted by ticks and horseflies. Bunyaviridae has a pronounced seasonal nature and is contracted mainly in the summer months (June-September). Infection of humans occurs through the bites of infected ticks, as well as from sick people as a result of contact with broken skin or mucous membrane secretions that contain the virus. After the disease a strong immunity develops.
