Azerbaijan's first jam festival draws hundreds of visitors

By Nazrin Gadimova

Jam is an essential attribute of breakfast in many countries and has a special place in Azerbaijani cuisine. Azerbaijanis love jam with tea, instead of sugar. Whoever you visit, you generally will be offered at least two or three kinds of jam. In this regard, the culinary imagination knows no limits: you can find jams from watermelon, cherry, plum, fig, peach, strawberry, raspberry, and even eggplant. And all of this is indescribably delicious, especially on a cold winter evening with a cup of hot tea.

The country's first Jam Festival, which attracted hundreds of local and foreign visitors, was held on August 24-25. Azerbaijan's historic city Gabala, which recently hosted various cultural events, has become the pioneer of another interesting event. Representatives of the National Cooking Center presented 12 kinds of jam from 12 cities of the country during the event, which was organized with the support of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Culture and Tourism in cooperation with the Executive Authority of Gabala.

Under the terms of the contest, each participant could present one kind of jam, which was assessed by a 100-point system.

According to the jury, the winner was Basira Abbasova from the Ujar region. Her apricot jam gained 93.6 points and brought her a cash prize of 500 manats. A team from Gabala won the 2nd place and 300 manats for the rose jam and a team from Oguz came 3rd, gaining 200 manats for their plum jam. The other participants were awarded diplomas.

The visitors had the opportunity to try different kinds of jam made of walnuts, pomegranates, cherries, watermelon, cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, grapes and roses. In addition to jam, a variety of desserts and Azerbaijani dishes were offered during the festival.

President of the National Culinary Association of Azerbaijan Tahir Amiraslanov expressed confidence that the next festival will be international and said that although the festival was held for the first time, it attracted a lot of public attention.
