Lobbyists spark uproar in US
A statement by the head of a US lobbyist group that it had
allegedly arranged a meeting of President George Bush with his
Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev has sparked a wave of public
uproar in the United States.
Major US TV channels CNN and MSNBC have aired reports on Azerbaijan based on the work by Stephen Payne, who heads the Worldwide Strategic Partners organization. The media said that Bush`s hosting the Azerbaijani leader under the clout of the lobbyists had caused Americans` indignation with Washington.
Congress members have forwarded an enquiry to the White House. Journalists have followed suit, demanding that the US government divulge documents concerning its links with the lobbyist group.
Payne said WSP`s work for Azerbaijan was nonpolitical, but its brochure says that it "implemented an aggressive media campaign to discredit the Azeri opposition".
Azerbaijan has been striving to align itself with the U.S. and Europe through consistent efforts aimed at democratization and economic development. Azerbaijan has also been a firm supporter of the US-led war on terror, signing every one of the international counter-terrorism conventions.
