Four decades since Heydar Aliyev`s ascent to power
July 14 marks the 39th anniversary of the nationwide leader, former president Heydar Aliyev`s coming to power in Azerbaijan.
Aliyev, who was appointed to the post of first secretary of the Central Committee, the ruling body of the Azerbaijan Republic`s Communist Party, in 1969, was the youngest leader to hold the position in the Soviet Union. Throughout 13 years of his tenure, Azerbaijan turned into a major industrial republic. It was in this period that the Republican Palace, the Domestic Air Conditioners Plant, the International Airport, the Republican Sports and Exhibition Complex and hundreds of other buildings had been constructed.
The construction of the Jamshid Nakhchivansky Military School in Azerbaijan was part of Heydar Aliyev`s vision on future independence of the republic. By taking the step, he was materializing his goal to provide Azerbaijan`s defense industry with its own cadres.
Sending Azerbaijani youths to study in the world`s leading higher schools was also part of Aliyev`s far-sighted policy. Taking into account the tremendous importance to be played by Azerbaijan`s oil in the future, he turned the republic into USSR`s "oil academy", which is proven by the construction of refineries and plants producing oil field equipment in the republic.
Aliyev moved to Moscow in 1982 at the request of the USSR`s leader Yuri Andropov to undertake the post of first deputy prime minister in the powerful Soviet state. He was then appointed first deputy chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers. In 1987, he had to resign from the post due to his disagreement with the policy pursued by the head of state Mikhail Gorbachev. In 1991, Aliyev returned to Azerbaijan and acted as a member of the Supreme Council and then as chair of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic`s Supreme Majlis (parliament). Aliyev, who was called to Baku in May-June 1993 at a time the country was facing a predicament, began to act first as Azerbaijan`s parliament speaker and then as president. He was re-elected in 1998 with the overwhelming majority of votes. Aliyev made a tremendous effort for the sake of the country`s development till the last days of his life.
The nationwide leader passed away on December 12, 2003 at a hospital in Cleveland, the United States.
