US embassy accused of `disrespect`
An Azerbaijani lawmaker has accused the US embassy of
disrespect.
At a Milli Majlis (parliament) sitting on Friday, Jala Aliyeva said that despite numerous invitations to the annual event marking the United States` Independence Day, she has been unable to attend.
"The cars of those coming to the reception are not allowed to approach the embassy compound. Most of the invitees have to walk several kilometers due to security measures," the MP said.
Aliyeva said she had decided to attend this year`s celebrations scheduled at the Hyatt Regency Hotel but was disappointed with the decision afterwards, as her vehicle was blocked from parking outside the building.
"When I asked the security guards why, they told me that only the cars with license plates granted by the embassy would be allowed to park outside the building. Subsequently, only the embassy`s vehicles were let in," the lawmaker said, requesting that the parliament take action in this regard.
Speaker Ogtay Asadov agreed with the criticism and that the move was a sign of disrespectful attitude.
"Parliament members themselves should come out against such unlawful actions by the embassy. The grievances should be aired during meetings with representatives of diplomatic corps taking place within various functions," Asadov said.
