PACE head condemns massacre in north Azerbaijan
The remains found at a burial in Azerbaijan`s Guba district are a consequence of a chilling massacre, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Lluis Maria de Puig said during a visit to the country`s northern regions on Thursday.
While saying he was unaware of the perpetrators of the mass killings, Puig condemned the crimes.
"I witnessed first-hand the barbaric killings," the PACE president said, adding that he was appalled by the atrocities.
Puig said he would report on his findings to a special PACE commission and advise it to examine the area.
The mass burial was discovered during the operations on building a stadium in Guba. Azerbaijani researchers have confirmed that the burial was part of the genocide committed against Azerbaijanis by Armenians in March 1918. The remains of 190 people have been found in the area so far. The Jewish community was subject to the atrocities as well.
The experts said the burial contains the remains of women and children. The fact that the bones were scattered all over the area indicated that these persons had been killed with utmost brutality.
In 1918, Armenians killed 16,000 people in the Guba district alone. During the tragic developments, over 50,000 Azerbaijanis were killed throughout the republic and 10,000 people were ousted from their homes.
