Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Romania is based on a strategic partnership, Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean said at a press conference following talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku on Friday.

Corlatean said that the two countries have a good potential for the development of cooperation.

"I met with the leadership of the country. We have discussed a number of current issues of cooperation and those of significant investments and other trade issues," he said.

Corlatean went on to say that the Romanian side intends to organize a business forum comprising entrepreneurs from the two countries, and that country appreciates Azerbaijan's contribution towards Europe's energy security.

According to him, Romania is also ready to continue supporting Azerbaijan in the process of its integration into the European organizations, including NATO.

As for the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, Corlatean said Romania supports peace talks on the settlement of the conflict, which began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

Mammadyarov, for his part, said the two countries have a strategic partnership agreement.

According to him, the parties discussed improved visa system facilitation between the two countries, the AGRI project, etc.

Romania was the second country to recognize Azerbaijan's independence in 1991.

Several bilateral high-level meetings have been held in recent years. The two countries' leaders and foreign ministers' state visits have boosted the relations.

As a result, bilateral relations reached the level of Strategic Partnership in 2009. A number of contracts in the energy sector have been signed as well.
