Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of cyber espionage
Armenian security bodies maintained that the computers of the
country's government agencies and private enterprises are being
infected with viruses sent from Azerbaijan to acquire intelligence
data.
The Azerbaijani minister said the allegations were baseless. "It could be that the viruses are entering their computers from other places, and Armenians are trying to use this against us."
Hacker attacks of this kind can be carried out by sending seemingly regular e-mails that contain viruses redirecting information from infected PCs to other computers.
The Armenian National Security Service noted that such emails could be used to implant various viruses, such as Perfect Key Logger. In this case, a special program is automatically installed on the target computer unbeknownst to the user. The software periodically redirects all scripts and passwords to another email address, leaving the computer unprotected and allowing unauthorized access to information, the Armenian secret service said.
The source alleged that it had succeeded in tracing the email where all the confidential data was being sent. It said a scrutiny suggests that the intrusions had been orchestrated by the secret services of foreign countries, and were likely to have originated in Azerbaijan.
