Georgian FM says relations with Azerbaijan at high level

By Nigar Orujova

Georgian-Azerbaijani relations have always been at a high level and this tradition will continue in the future.

Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze made the remarks at a joint briefing after meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku on Tuesday.

"We have discussed several bilateral and international issues," she said. "Azerbaijan and Georgia play an important geopolitical role in the region and have important projects aimed for the future."

She added that several international issues were discussed during the meeting.

Touching on the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Panjikidze stressed that Georgia supports Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

"Tbilisi has good relations with Baku and supports Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty," she said. "Tbilisi gets the same support from Baku."

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.

She went on to say that Georgia and Armenia have normal relations and Georgia is interested in good relations with it.

Minister Panjikidze arrived in Azerbaijan on Monday for a two-day visit. During the visit, Panjikidze also met with President Ilham Aliyev, first vice speaker of parliament Ziyafat Asgarov and attended an international conference on strengthening cooperation in preventing terrorism held in Baku this week.
