CE to take action to release journalists
The Council of Europe (CE) will take extra steps to release the
imprisoned journalists, the organization's Commissioner for Human
Rights Thomas Hammarberg told reporters.
Hammarberg said his office was carrying out work in this direction but declined to elaborate. He said that the Azerbaijani government did not fully follow the recommendations of neither his office nor other CE bodies.
"The governments disregarding European democratic institutions are making a great mistake. They will see the consequences," the commissioner said.
Three journalists are currently jailed in Azerbaijan - Azadlig newspaper editor Ganimat Zahid, an employee of the publication Mirza Sakit and the editor of Realny Azerbaijan and Gundalik Azerbaijan newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev.
