Gov't plans 'diplomatic township'

12 December 2007 19:55 (UTC+04:00)
The Azerbaijani government has made a proposal to establish a "diplomatic township" for foreign embassies and offices of international organizations, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Khazar Ibrahim said.
Under the proposal, all of the diplomatic missions operating in Baku are to be moved to this location, common infrastructure established and suitable conditions provided for the security and housing of diplomats working in the country.
"We are awaiting the Baku mayor's office decision on the allocation of a land plot for the construction operations," Ibrahim told a news conference Monday, adding that the township is likely to be located away from the city center.
He explained the emergence of such a proposal by existing international experience.
35 diplomatic representations are currently operating in the Azerbaijani capital, with some based in Icheri Sheher (Old City), a historic site downtown Baku.
The US embassy spokesman Johnatan Henick has told Radio Liberty that the new location of the diplomatic representation was up to his country as well.
"We wouldn't want the embassy to be located away from the city center," he said and added that the embassy had not received a relevant proposal from the Azerbaijani government so far.
