US embassy to relocate over security concerns
A new building will be constructed for the US embassy in Azerbaijan, its spokesman Johnatan Henick said.
The measure is based on a $4 billion program on ensuring the security of US diplomatic missions abroad developed by the Department of State.
"The embassy in Baku is currently not ideal in terms of security. However, Azerbaijani power-wilding agencies are doing their utmost to safeguard it as part of close cooperation with the US embassy," Henick said.
The spokesman said funding has been allocated for the construction operations but a suitable location has yet to be found.
He said that along with security considerations, construction of the new building is due to the increasing number of employees in light of the embassy's expanding operations in the country.
The embassy is currently based in two locations. A compound on the Azadlig Avenue is used under a long-term leasing contract as well as space rented in the Landmark business center.
