Unresolved dispute on Russia-EU summit agenda
The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh
will be discussed at the Russia-European Union summit due
Thursday.
Russian envoy to the EU Vladimir Chizhov said the issue will be
tabled in the town of Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, as one of the
unresolved disputes in the Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS).
"The EU is not hiding its aspiration to get more actively involved
in resolving 'frozen' conflicts in the post-Soviet area," he told a
Moscow-Brussels video-conference dedicated to key issues in the
relations between Russia and the 27-member bloc.
Chizhov said Moscow was witnessing this aspiration on the part of
its EU partners and was ready to discuss their contribution, but
provided that these efforts do not trample on existing formats of
negotiations.
"If we are talking about Upper Garabagh, there is the [mediating]
OSCE Minsk Group and the trilateral co-chairmanship, with France
representing the EU. Existing formats of settlement are also in
place for the Georgian-Abkhaz and the Georgian-South Ossetian
conflicts. Therefore, we will be discussing the topic in this very
context," Chizhov concluded.
