Azerbaijan, US to hold high-level dialog on democracy
The United States and Azerbaijan are getting ready for high-level
dialog on democracy issues. The discussions will kick off in Baku
on Friday, the US embassy spokesman Johnatan Henick said.
The talks will center on the situation ahead of the October presidential elections and media freedom in the country. The U.S. will be represented by Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, David Kramer.
"Democracy and economic reform are one of our key priorities in Azerbaijan. But there are certain problems in this area. We hope that direct dialog will give an incentive to their solution," the spokesman said.
The issues to be tabled include US assistance in the implementation of Azerbaijan's international commitments on human rights.
US-Azeri dialog on democracy started in December 2006. Three rounds of such discussions have been held so far.
