Czech Republic condemns separatist vote

26 October 2007 11:31 (UTC+04:00)
In a statement, its foreign ministry said elections to local bodies in the region could be considered legitimate only after Azerbaijan's sovereign rights are restored, and refugees displaced by hostilities return home and take part in the polling.
"The Foreign Ministry believes that such separatist actions are posing hurdles in the way of a negotiated settlement to the Garabagh conflict," the statement said.
The Czech government also said it backed the activity of the mediating OSCE Minsk Group and encouraged the conflicting sides to keep on negotiating to find a peaceful solution of the long-running dispute.
Upper Garabagh has been occupied by the Armenian forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended separatist hostilities that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted about a million out of their homes. The Minsk Group is co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France.
