Int'l nuclear watchdog submits co-op plan
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has submitted a
general plan of cooperation on ensuring nuclear security to the
Azerbaijani government. The plan was discussed during a three-day
visit by the agency's delegation to Baku last week.
An IAEA nuclear trafficking expert Richard Hoskins said the document had been submitted to a number of Azerbaijani government agencies. It envisions drafting legislative framework to provide nuclear security, ensuring that no risks are posed by radio-active materials and creating logistics required to trace and treat such substances.
"The Azerbaijani side offered supplements and changes to the plan during the meetings," Hoskins said. "We have outlined potential areas where additions could be made."
The IAEA representative said work on the plan would be completed in the near future.
He added that such plans have been implemented in 44 countries around the globe and that Azerbaijan was the first country among CIS states in this respect.
