Freedom of speech rally put off

12 December 2007 17:33 (UTC+04:00)
The rally in support of freedom of speech initially scheduled in Baku for Saturday has been postponed.
Journalists plan to take to the streets to advocate for freedom of expression and the press, and protection of the rights of their jailed counterparts.
President of the Public Forum for Azerbaijan Eldar Namazov maintained that by refusing to authorize the proposed venue for the protest, the authorities are impeding its conduct.
The city mayor's office did not approve the protesters' appeal for permission to gather on the Ukraine Square, suggesting instead as a venue a stadium in the Bayil settlement.
Namazov said the organizers had visited the proposed area and decided that it was unsuitable for the rally as it is too far from the city center.
The rally has been scheduled for December 22 instead, according to Friday's decision of the Public Committee for the Protection of Free Speech and Journalists. The organizers have notified the executive authorities that they insist on the same venue.
