Solidarity Day of World Azerbaijanis and New Year celebrated in Washington

An event dedicated to Solidarity Day of World Azerbaijanis and the upcoming New Year was held in Washington on Thursday. The celebration was organized by the Washington Center for Azerbaijani Studies, AzerTac state news agency reported.

The event was attended by the members of Azerbaijani-American community living in Washington, as well as in the states of Virginia and Maryland.

The evening was opened by the director of the Washington Center for Azerbaijani Studies Gadir Shiraliyev, who congratulated the participants with the Solidarity Day and New Year, and spoke of the importance of the occasion and significance of solidarity for all Azerbaijani-Americans.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United States Elin Suleymanov delivered a speech, highlighting the succesful journey of independent Azerbaijan and the difficulties it has overcome as a state. The ambassador called on the Azerbaijani-American community to be active in supporting Azerbaijan and quoted congratulatory note by President Ilham Aliyev on the occassion of Solidarity Day, underlining the fact Azerbaijan remains the motherland for all Azerbaijanis around the world.

The co-founder and chairman of Karabakh Foundation in Washington and the director of U.S. Azeris Network (USAN) Adil Baguirov spoke of the history of the December 31 Solidarity Day and gave information about the activities of the organizations he represented.

The last speech was delivered by one of the oldest members of the Azerbaijani community in Washington, Habib Azersina, who shared his views on independent Azerbaijan and significance of the Solidarity Day for Azerbaijanis.

The evening, which included catered Azerbaijani food, continued with live Azerbaijani music and dances.
