Major ring detained

26 October 2007 11:26 (UTC+04:00)
Large quantities of weapons and ammunition were confiscated from the gang headed by an individual named Telman Abdullayev during an operation carried out by the National Security Ministry last Wednesday, its spokesman Arif Babayev told Radio Liberty. The outlaws possessed four hand grenades, 91 fuses, 875 grams of TNT, 150 sub-machine gun bullets, and a roadmap of Sumgayit.
The criminal group is said to have previously shown armed resistance to police officers in the country's northern Gusar district.
Investigators have ascertained that several other gang members remain at large, and work is underway to arraign them, Babayev said.
Ringleader Abdullayev, a Gusar resident, opened fire at two policemen as the National Security and Interior Ministries conducted an operation to seize him on September 26. One of the wounded law enforcers died later. Abdullayev has yet to be detained.
The control over entry and exit to and from Sumgayit was tightened on October 11. Official sources did not provide any information to that end, but some reports circulated that a search for several persons of Arabic origin was carried out there on that day.
