Security officers get jail terms over spying for Russia
A group of senior security officers of the International Airport of Baku charged with spying for the Russian secret service were handed down jail sentences at the Military Court on Grave Crimes on Thursday.
The former chief of the security service, Emil Suleymanov, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with the confiscation of property. He was banned to serve in state bodies for three years after his release. The judge also ruled to send an inquiry to the National Security Ministry on depriving Suleymanov of his rank of colonel.
The former operations chief of the airport Tamerlan Mayilov, engineering specialist Tahir Asadzada and the programmer with the state airline AzAL, Faig Guliyev, were convicted to two and a half years' imprisonment.
The National Security Ministry's lieutenant-colonel Rafat Aliyev was handed down a three-year jail term.
Investigators established that the security officers had passed over to the Russian secret service information about high-ranking foreign delegations visiting Azerbaijan as well as photos of Azerbaijani secret service officers. They also eavesdropped the entire airport area, including the president's talks with government officials and representatives of other countries.
