10 terrorists detained by Azerbaijani border guards this year (UPDATE)

Azerbaijani border guards detained 10 people during this year as a part of the fight against terrorism, Trend news agency reported.

Seven Azerbaijani citizens and two foreigners were detained on suspicion of espionage, the head of the State Border Service Elchin Guliyev said at a news conference on the year end results.

During this period, eight organised groups involved in smuggling and drug trafficking were rendered harmless.

The border guards also arrested 615 violators of the state border and 12,011 people who violated border crossing rules. 25.1 per cent of the trespassers were detained while crossing the border from Azerbaijan, 74.9 per cent, the border to Azerbaijan.

More than 63 per cent of the trespassers are citizens of Azerbaijan, while others are citizens of Uzbekistan, Iran, Georgia, Afghanistan, Nigeria and other countries, Guliyev said.

39.3 per cent of trespassers are residents of Azerbaijani border regions.

During the reporting period, the border service officers used a firearm in 10 cases. As a result, one Iranian was killed, the other citizen injured.

427 people tried to cross the border with false documents, while 21 attempted using other people's documents.

The Border Service officers detained and handed over to law enforcement agencies 1896 wanted persons, 4836 who are prohibited from leaving the country and 463 persons restricted from entering the country.

Smuggled goods worth more than 7,8 million manats and 250 kg of narcotics were confiscated.
