GUAM seeks superpowers' backing for resolution
The regional group GUAM will put the resolution on "frozen"
conflicts on voting at the UN General Assembly only after it
musters support of superpowers for the initiative, the
organization's head said.
"We will disclose the date for tabling the document provided that major world players are among its supporters. Consultations on the issue are under way," said Valeri Chechelashvili, secretary general of the group that comprises Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.
The Georgian diplomat said two similar resolutions passed earlier at the initiative of Azerbaijan and Georgia had contributed greatly to the comprehension and support of GUAM's stance among the international community, and the UN in particular.
Chechelashvili said that even if the mentioned resolution were to be voted upon today, GUAM would achieve overwhelming support of UN member states. However, it is important to hold off the vote for the time being, he said.
"In any case, most countries would vote for our resolution. However, what we need is not just the quantity of countries supporting it, but also quality," Chechelashvili said.
The UN resolution on the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan passed in March called for a swift and unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani land. 39 states voted for the document.
