The Japanese optometrist Akio Kanai, the chairman of Fuji Optical Ltd, is in Azerbaijan to conduct the Fourth Fuji Optical Vision Aid Mission, together with a team of five optometrists.
During the 10-day visit, Dr. Kanai and his team will provide eye screening services and spectacles to thousands of IDPs during this mission in Sumgayit, Gabala and Oghuz regions. A total of 3,500 IDPs expected benefit in 2008, the UNHCR said.
As a result of Kanai's previous Vision Aid missions to Azerbaijan in 2005, 2006 and 2007 thousands of displaced people were able to receive free eye screening and spectacles through Fuji Optical.
Kanai was conferred in 2006 with the Nansen Refugee Award by UNHCR for providing free eye testing and spectacles to almost 110,000 people over two decades.
