US withdraws Armenia mine clearance aid
The US government has withdrawn its funding allocated to Armenia
for mine clearance activities on the insistence of the Azerbaijani
government. The move was mainly due to the mismanagement of
funds.
"Americans have realized that Armenians are engaged in deceiving them," the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) said.
Whereas the Azerbaijani government allots funds every year to step up work on clearing mines, in addition to US assistance, the opposite is observed in Armenia where the government misappropriates funds instead of financing the activities.
The government of Azerbaijan has steadily increased funding for such activities since 2001 from 10 to 75 per cent. 14-18 million square meters of territory are cleared off mines in the country every year.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law.
