Ecology minister: Earth's biological resources being depleted

The Earth is sounding the alarm, as its biological resources are being depleted, Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Huseyngulu Bagirov said on Monday, speaking at Green Week in Baku, organized by IDEA campaign and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

"As a result of misguided policy of some countries, the Earth's resources are not sufficient for humanity. And people have to use resources that have to be left to future generations," Bagirov said.

According to him, no matter how the states care about the environment, whichever projects are implemented in this field, the main task today is to change people's attitudes towards the environment.

"It is possible to change people's attitude to nature and its protection without contributing large amount of investments. And youth can play a great role in this," the minister said.

The International Youth Forum was opened simultaneously within the Green Week in Baku.

At its opening, the Regional UNEP Coordinator Wondwosen Asnake Kibret said that issues of sustainable development and the outcome of the Rio +20 summit, and close cooperation between youth organizations will be discussed at the forum, held with the participation of the Azerbaijani and foreign young people.

IDEA campaign (International dialogue in the name of environmental protection), established in 2011 by the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva, is the author of numerous local and international projects. Large-scale projects carried out by IDEA campaign, are of interest for a number of international organizations. In this regard, IDEA campaign is launching new joint projects in cooperation with international organizations.

The Green Week, which started in Baku on Monday, will run till Friday.

International Youth Forum will end with a declaration dedicated to the implementation of the Rio +20 summit decisions. This document will be forwarded to the participants of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.
