Azeri leader vows to free occupied land
President Ilham Aliyev said Tuesday that Azerbaijan would resort to
all means at its disposal to free its territories from Armenian
occupation.
"The war is not over yet. Upper Garabagh is Azerbaijani territory, and we will liberate our land from occupation at any cost," the commander-in-chief said on a visit to the Azerbaijani enclave of Nakhchivan.
Addressing the opening of a newly-built residential building for servicemen at a military unit in the Shahbuz district, the head of state did not rule out that means other than diplomacy would be used any time to settle the long-standing conflict. He said Azerbaijan's position was strengthening by the day and the country was currently the leader in the region. Aliyev pointed out the adoption of the UN resolution demanding unconditional pullout of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan passed in mid-March as an example of Azerbaijan's increasing influence in the international arena.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Peace talks have been fruitless so far.
