Monument to 'Armenian genocide' erected in Greek Cyprus

5 June 2008 21:08 (UTC+04:00)
A monument to the "genocide of Armenians" that allegedly happened in the early 20th century has been erected in the Greek part of the ethnically divided island of Cyprus.
The opening ceremony was attended in Nicosia by the Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias.
Armenians say Ottoman Turks killed 1.5 million people in 1915, a claim strenuously denied by the modern Turkish state.
Christofias cordially congratulated Armenians on this occasion and repeatedly praised this nation. He regarded construction of the monument as "a duty" paid to Armenia which he described as a friendly nation to Cypriots.
Christofias claimed that Armenians had escaped great disaster by "saving their descendants from Turks" at the time.
