EU to aid ex-Soviet states in admission bids
European Union foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday
decided to assist the former Soviet republics in their bids to
enter the 27-member bloc.
The South Caucasus republics - Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia - as well as Ukraine and Moldova are among countries to be included in the new group proposed by Poland and Sweden - "Eastern partnership". The organization is to be coordinated by the European Commission.
Under the proposal, the EU will provide equal support to Eastern partners as they strive to comprehensively integrate into the European family. The support will cover economic assistance, efforts at boosting trade and easing visa regulations.
Meetings among ministers and parliament members will also be arranged to step up multi-faceted cooperation.
Reports say France is backing the initiative, and other European powers such as Germany, Britain and the Netherlands are taking interest in the proposal.
"Eastern partnership" is to be financed on account of the funds designated for the European New Neighborhood Policy.
