Report says Iranian scholar anonymously addressed Aliyev
An anonymous letter addressed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev
has been posted on an Iranian website linked to the former
commander of the Revolutionary Guards Corps (Sepah) Mohsun
Rezayi.
The letter on behalf of a Tebriz scholar, uploaded on www.tabnak.ir, was headlined "Mr. Aliyev, instead of sending soldiers to Iraq and Afghanistan, you should think about Garabagh," online news publication Mediaforum said.
Referring to similarities between Iran and Azerbaijan, the writer claimed that "the population of the Azerbaijan Republic was once Iranian citizens" and criticized President Aliyev's sending a congratulatory letter to Israeli leaders on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the state of Israel.
The letter also alleged that Iranian nationals face torture in Azerbaijani prisons.
It also touched on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict and the work of the mediating OSCE Minsk Group (MG). The letter stressed that 14 years have passed since the group, co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France, was vested with the task of brokering the peace process. The writer said no major steps have been taken to resolve the dispute so far, emphasizing that the MG co-chairs had refused to back a resolution asserting Azerbaijan's territorial integrity recently passed at the United Nations.
