Imports of old cars to be banned
Imports of old cars to Azerbaijan may be banned in light of
concerns over environmental pollution.
Under proposals of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the delivery of vehicles made more than five years ago in developed countries and those made in Russia and other CIS states over three years ago will no longer be allowed.
Environmentalists say used cars are mostly to blame for pollution of the atmosphere.
The ministry has developed a plan of activities on bringing technical requirements of locally-used cars into compliance with European standards. The document has been submitted to the government for consideration.
Vehicles are estimated to cause 40-50 per cent of air pollution. Research has confirmed that some cars made in the Soviet times and later in Russia are the worst polluters.
