New TV channels to open in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is getting ready to launch broadcasts of new radio stations and TV channels, the country's broadcast regulator said on Wednesday.

Though Azerbaijan has enough nationwide and regional TV channels, there are no regional radio stations, and soon a tender will be conducted to open them, Nushiravan Maharramli, National TV and Radio Council (NTRC) head, told Trend news agency during an event dedicated to the 10-year anniversary of the council.

"New TV channels are needed to fill the void emerging in the regions," NTRC attorney Tohid Aliyev told AzerNews.

Aliyev said new TV channels are more needed in the regions as most of locals prefer them over those airing throughout the country.

"This is due to the fact that regional channels cover everyday life of the locals," he added.

50 broadcasters currently operate in Azerbaijan. Nine nationwide television networks are broadcasting in the country. The number of regional TV channels has been brought to 14. There are also 13 cable TV companies as well as 14 radio stations.
