Azeri MPs oppose Russian plans to transfer military base to Yerevan

Azerbaijan is concerned that Russia is seeking to transfer its military base in Armenia to Yerevan, deputy speaker of Azerbaijan's parliament said Monday.

"In this regard, several meetings have been held with relevant agencies, which stated that the issue is under consideration," Ziyafat Asgarov said at a sitting of the parliament's fall session. He added that the meetings will be followed by an official response on the issue.

MP Sabir Rustamkhanli also raised the issue of Russia's transferring its military bases in Armenia to Yerevan.

"No one can guarantee that Russian arms will not be supplied from Armenia to the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh [an Azerbaijani region occupied by Armenian armed forces since a 1990s war]," Rustamkhanli said.

The MP believes it is necessary to appeal to the UN so that the latter would properly react to Russia's plans.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions, has been under Armenian occupation since the two South Caucasus republics signed a cease-fire in 1994 following the brutal war.

Peace talks, brokered by the United States, Russia and France through the OSCE Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on a pullout from Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven surrounding regions.
