New commission set up at Azeri parliament
A new commission has been established at the Azerbaijani parliament to bring to the attention of international organizations and parliaments of other countries the legislature's position on the issue regarding Azerbaijani military officer Ramil Safarov.
Safarov was transferred to his home country after being jailed for killing an Armenian officer while in a state of emotional distress in Hungary in 2004.
Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov made a proposal to establish the commission on Monday at the first plenary meeting of the Milli Majlis fall session.
"Recently attempts have been made to put pressure [on Azerbaijan] over the issue of the release of Azerbaijani officer Ramil Safarov. Establishing this commission is very important for pre-empting these attempts and the biased documents being adopted," Asadov said.
Safarov hails from Jabrayil, one of Azerbaijan's regions under Armenian occupation. Safarov, 35, who participated in NATO exercises in 2004 in Hungary, was charged with the murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan, who insulted the Azerbaijani flag. A Budapest court sentenced Safarov to life imprisonment without the right to parole for 30 years. On August 31, Hungary extradited Safarov to Azerbaijan, where he was pardoned by President Ilham Aliyev, greeted as a national hero and promoted to the rank of major.
