Azerbaijan, Turkey and Georgia holding exercises on pipeline security
By Seymur Aliyev
Azerbaijani, Georgian and Turkish troops are conducting military
exercises aimed at improving security for energy pipelines.
The military drills are being held near the Turkish capital Ankara
with representatives of the three states' armed forces and security
forces responsible for guarding pipelines.
The "Eternity-2012" computer supported trainings will last till
September 28 and are underway in the Training and Doctrine Command
of the Turkish Land Forces. 19 people, including two
representatives from the Turkish state pipeline company BOTAS, are
taking part in the training from Turkey.
In May, the flow of Azerbaijani natural gas to Turkey via the
Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline was halted after an unexplained
explosion hit the line on Turkish territory.
In June, Turkey, and Azerbaijan signed a deal to build a $7 billion
Trans-Anatolian natural-gas pipeline (TANAP) -- a project meant to
carry Azerbaijani natural gas to European markets without passing
through Russia or Iran.
