Ambassador: US government has no bearing on anti-Islamic movie

The U.S. government has no bearing on the "Innocence of Muslims" movie -- which recently sparked widespread protests in the Muslim world, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morningstar told media, commenting on the protests over the anti-Islamic movie outside US embassies.

"The U.S. has a long and tolerant history," Morningstar said. "Freedom of religion is enshrined in the country's constitution and is one of its core parts.

"This film is disgusting and despicable," he said. "President Obama has regarded it the same way. I openly state that the US government has nothing to do with this movie. However, no matter how offensive and disgusting this film is, I think nothing can justify violence. People were killed in Libya because of this movie. This is tragic. I reiterate that nothing can justify the violence."

The privately produced film, which denigrates Prophet Muhammad, sparked widespread protests, some of them deadly, across Muslim nations this month. According to the latest reports, at least 51 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, were killed and injured during the protests over the U.S.-made movie.
