Russian-Azeri ties example of friendly partnership: Putin aide
Russia-Azerbaijan relations are an example of friendly partnership in the Caucasus, though each of the two countries defends its interests, Russian President Vladimir Putin's special representative for international cultural cooperation, Mikhail Shvydkoy, has said.
"Of course, traditional communications have played their part: Azerbaijani diaspora in Russia, our compatriots in Azerbaijan act as the pivot of our cooperation," Shvydkoy said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, a Russian government newspaper.
Shvydkoy pointed out that Azerbaijan for the Russian people is a friendly and highly attractive country having, among other things, geopolitical importance in the Caucasus.
"Stability in Azerbaijan largely determines the stability and security in the South Caucasus region. This is necessary not only for Russia but also for other countries in the international community, given the huge load of problems in the Middle and Near East," he said.
