Iran says working to strengthen relations with Azerbaijan
Iranian and Azerbaijani officials are working on strengthening relations between the two countries, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast was quoted by Press TV channel as saying on Tuesday.
Mehmanparast blamed certain forces in both counties for trying to damage bilateral relations, which he said are developing and expanding nonetheless.
The relations between Iran and Azerbaijan deteriorated after two Azerbaijani poets were detained in the neighboring country over four months ago. The Iranian side accused the detainees of an attempt to commit a crime.
In early September, the Iranian authorities released the poets, who were arrested on May 2, after arriving in Tabriz to participate in a poetry festival.
Azerbaijan had to issue five diplomatic notes to the Iranian Foreign Ministry to enquire about the detained poets and organize a meeting between them and the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission.
