OSCE to conduct frontline monitoring

According to the mandate of the OSCE Chairman's Personal Representative, monitoring will be held on the contact line between Armenian and Azerbaijani armed forces near the mountain pass Omar of the Azerbaijani Goygol region on Wednesday, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported.

The monitoring will be held on the Azerbaijani side by OSCE Chairman-in-Office Personal Representative Andrzej Kasprzyk's field assistant Jiri Aberle and personal assistant William Pryor.

The monitoring will be held on the opposite side by Andrzej Kasprzyk and his field assistant Christo Christov.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since the 1990s war, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.
