Armenia’s suspension of ties with Hungary ‘not to affect talks with EU’
Armenia's decision to suspend diplomatic relations with Hungary will not affect Yerevan's negotiations with the European Union over the Association Agreement, Anca Paduraru, a spokesperson for EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) Stefan Fule, told Mediamax news agency.
On August 31, Armenia suspended diplomatic relations with Hungary, after Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pardoned Ramil Safarov, an Azerbaijani army officer who had been jailed in Hungary for killing an Armenian officer in Budapest in 2004.
Safarov, 35, who participated in NATO exercises in Hungary, was charged with the murder of the Armenian officer, Gurgen Margaryan, who insulted the Azerbaijani flag, and was handed down a life sentence. Safarov was extradited to his home country last Friday and on the same day he was pardoned by President Ilham Aliyev.
