Rasmussen delays visit to Armenia

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen delayed a visit to Armenia on Wednesday, dpa reported.

Rasmussen was scheduled to meet Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and the country's foreign and defence ministers during the two-day visit, NATO said.

A "technical problem" with the NATO chief's aircraft forced a return to Brussels, and the trip would take place on Thursday, Rasmussen said on Twitter.

The visit comes amid escalating tensions between Armenia and neighboring Azerbaijan over Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's decision to pardon an Azerbaijani military officer who had been jailed for life in Hungary for the killing of an Armenian officer in 2004.

Hungary says it returned the officer to Azerbaijan last Friday.

NATO chief is expected to visit Azerbaijan as part of a regional tour of the South Caucasus.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been in conflict for around three decades over Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian-occupied territory inside Azerbaijan.
