Turkish minister urges France to step up effort on Karabakh

France must be active in settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, Turkish Minister for EU Affairs Egemen Bagis said, media reported on Wednesday.

France could restore talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and this, in turn, may have an impact on the Armenian-Turkish relations, Bagis said.

"Twenty percent of Azerbaijani land is occupied. Such situation threatens stability in the region," he said.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a fragile ceasefire was signed in 1994.

France co-chairs the OSCE Minsk Group brokering peace talks, along with the United States and Russia. The negotiations have been largely fruitless so far.
