Armenia refuses to attend CIS meeting in Baku

The Armenian police has sent a message to the participants of the upcoming Council of Interior Ministers of the CIS countries meeting in Baku to protest the extradition from Hungary and the subsequent pardon of Azerbaijani officer Ramil Safarov, and declared its refusal to participate in the meeting, RIA Novosti reported.

According to the press service, the chief of the Armenian police transfers the powers of the chairman of the Council of CIS Minister of Internal Affairs to the Russian minister.

The next meeting will be held in Baku on Thursday, September 6.

The document states that in this situation the Armenian delegation considers it impossible to participate in the meeting in Baku.

Safarov, who was convicted in Hungary, extradited on Friday to Azerbaijan. The same day, under an order of the head of state, he was pardoned.

Safarov hails from Jabrayil, one of Azerbaijan's regions that are under Armenian occupation. Safarov, 35, who participated in NATO exercises in 2004 in Hungary, was charged with the murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan, who insulted the Azerbaijani flag. A Budapest court sentenced Safarov to life imprisonment without the right to parole for 30 years.
