Tlakskoake square in the Mexican capital Mexico City has been named 'Khojaly', Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev told reporters on Thursday.

He said repair work has been completed at the square and a monument to the victims of the Khojaly tragedy will be erected there.

The Armenian military forces committed genocide in Khojaly on Feb. 26, 1992. 613 people were killed, including 63 children, 106 women and 70 old men.

A total of 1000 civilians were disabled during the genocide. Eight families were annihilated, 130 children lost one parent and 25 lost both. Additionally, 1275 innocent residents were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 remains unknown.

Abdullayev also said that a monument to national leader Heydar Aliyev was erected in the Park of Friendship of Azerbaijan and Mexico. The opening ceremony of the monument was attended by an Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov. The event was also attended by the chairman of the International Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico Porfirio Munoz Ledo, as well as those who met with Heydar Aliyev during his visit to the country.

"The mayor of Mexico City in his speech said that the place for the monument is worthy of the national leader and the Azerbaijani people," Abdullayev said.
