Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan discuss coop prospects

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, who is attending the fourth extraordinary session of an Islamic summit in Mecca, discussed bilateral relations in a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart Yerzhan Kazykhanov, Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

Mammadyarov informed the Kazakh minister of Azerbaijan's activity in the UN Security Council, as well as cooperation and activities within the Non-Aligned Movement.

Kazykhanov congratulated Mammadyarov on his country's successful activities in the UNSC.

Azerbaijan was elected a non-permanent member of the UN council in October 2011.

Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), established in 1961, is an organization of countries based on the principles of non-participation in military blocs. NAM includes 118 states, while 20 more countries have observer status. Azerbaijan became a NAM member in May 2011.

The Azerbaijani and Kazakh foreign ministers also exchanged views regarding issues on the agenda of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Mecca.

The agenda includes the situation in Syria, Palestine, Myanmar (violence against Muslims in Rakhine), and Mali. A joint declaration and resolutions on the situation there will be adopted at the end of the extraordinary session.
