Aliyev to attend NAM summit in Tehran, says embassy

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is to attend a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran due August 20-25. An invitation to the event was handed to President Aliyev by Iranian Education Minister Hamid Reza Haji Babai at a meeting in Baku last Thursday, according to the Iranian embassy in Azerbaijan.

Hosting the Iranian minister, the president emphasized the importance of the NAM summit and participation in it, and also voiced hope for meeting his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad soon, the embassy said.

Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was established in 1961 as a resistance to ``domination`` of world powers and manifestations of colonialism. It is an organization of countries based on the principles of non-participation in military blocs. NAM includes 118 states, while 20 more countries have observer status. Azerbaijan became a NAM member in May 2011.

Besides Azerbaijan, members of the organization from the post-Soviet countries are Belarus and Uzbekistan, while Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Armenia are observers.
