Production of Kalashnikov rifles to be launched this year
Azerbaijan has no intention to stop using popular Russian-made AK-74 automatic rifles and plans to set up its own production capacities to manufacture such weapons till the end of the year, Defense Industry Minister Yaver Jamalov told journalists.
Jamalov was commenting on media reports saying Azerbaijan would turn down Kalashnikov guns and start using Tavor rifles instead.
He said the Ministry of Defense Industry currently manufactures weapons of 665 types, and the figure is expected to reach 700 by the year-end.
``We have new projects on the production of large-caliber ammunition, ammunition for tanks, artillery weapons and helicopters,`` Jamalov said.
He also said the ministry will hand over 60 drones to the Ministry of Defense by the year-end.
