Large market burns down

21 May 2008 20:44 (UTC+04:00)
A large market burned down in Baku late on Sunday. The "8th kilometer" bazaar, as referred to by residents in the capital, flared up simultaneously from different directions, eyewitnesses said.
The blaze engulfed some 800 square meters, rendering unusable over 5,000 stores and kiosks.
According to preliminary estimates, the fire was caused by a short circuit in electricity transmission lines. No casualties were reported. Investigation is under way.
After the incident, the police began patrolling the entries and exits to the market, and vendors were no longer allowed into the area. Over 2,000 entrepreneurs who were angered by the measure blocked the road. Hundreds of police officers were pulled to the site shortly thereafter. Tensions heightened after the law enforcers used batons against women to push them out of the way. Vendors cleared the road about an hour after the stand-off flared up.
Over 500 entrepreneurs demanding to find those responsible for the fire and to be compensated for the inflicted damage marched to the President's Office downtown Baku, but were not received by any official there due to Sunday's being a day-off.
