Transit of cargo to Bushehr to continue - Iran envoy
The transportation of equipment from Russia to Iran's Bushehr
nuclear plant through Azerbaijani territory will be continued,
Iranian ambassador in Baku Nasser Hamidi Zare told the press.
Azerbaijan's customs and border officials on March 29 detained a consignment on its way to the facility due to Moscow's failure to supply the needed permit. The vehicles carrying 10 tons of heat insulators needed to complete construction of the Islamic republic's first atomic power plant were released several weeks later.
Hamidi Zare said such transportation was in line with the law. "The detention of the cargo on the Astara border checkpoint was a purely technical issue, not a political one. The Azerbaijani side had demanded some documents needed for its release, and the problem was solved after Russia supplied them."
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigori Karasin who visited Baku last week said the two countries had agreed the transportation of cargoes to Bushehr. Baku, in turn, said the agreement did not envision any exceptions and no consignment would be allowed to pass through Azerbaijan without proper documentation.
